The Sudanese army has taken full control of the Presidential Palace in Khartoum, marking a major advance in the two-year-long conflict, Sudan TV and military sources confirmed on Friday.

Following the takeover, the army launched search operations in the surrounding areas, targeting fighters from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the sources reported.

The conflict began on April 15, 2023, when violent clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, displacing over 12.5 million people, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), asylum seekers, and refugees.

The war worsened Sudan’s existing crises, including ongoing conflicts, disease outbreaks, economic instability, political turmoil, and climate-related emergencies.

Even before the current war, Sudan was already struggling with violence and displacement, particularly since the Darfur crisis of 2003. The country had housed over 1 million refugees, the second-largest refugee population in Africa, with most fleeing conflicts in South Sudan and Northern Ethiopia, particularly Tigray.

The recent clashes between the SAF and RSF occurred when Sudan was already experiencing its highest levels of humanitarian need in a decade, further deepening the crisis.
