Nigeria Police crack down on gunrunning syndicate, arrest 2,740 suspects
The Nigeria Police Force, under the astute leadership of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has successfully dismantled a notorious gunrunning syndicate and arrested a staggering 2,740 suspects linked to various criminal activities across the nation within the last month.
The IGP’s diversified tactics have proved effective as the force continues its relentless pursuit to bring perpetrators of heinous crimes to justice. This sweeping operation has led to the arrest of 295 armed robbery suspects, 186 individuals involved in kidnapping, 271 accused of murder or homicide, and 71 individuals caught with unlawful firearms. Furthermore, 199 suspects were apprehended for sexual offenses, 143 for cultism, and 1,575 for various other crimes.
In a remarkable feat, the police recovered 185 firearms and 4,087 rounds of ammunition of different calibers, reclaimed 111 stolen vehicles, and rescued 129 kidnapped victims. These efforts underscore the force’s commitment to restoring safety and order across the country.
The recent dismantling of a gunrunning syndicate operating in the Bauchi-Plateau region marks a major victory in the fight against violent crime.
The syndicate, led by Taimako Mato, a former weapon handling instructor at a Boko Haram camp, was involved in the illegal distribution of firearms. Mato and his associates—John Danladi, Mohammed Munkail, Manasseh William, and Muhammadu Haddi—were apprehended with a PKT machine gun and substantial ammunition.
