Tinubu appoints Shettima as new NEC chairman

President Bola Tinubu has appointed the vice president, Kashim Shettima, as the chairman of the newly inaugurated National Executive Council, NEC.

Mr President unveiled this at the event held at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, June 16, 2023.

While speaking at the event graced by several governors across the six geo-political zones, Tinubu charged the council “to support his administration towards transforming the nation’s economy.”

Among the figures in attendance are Kashim Shettima, vice president of the federation; Seyi Makinde, Oyo state governor; Uba Sani, Kaduna state governor; Dapo Abiodun, Ogun state governor; Biodun Oyebanji, Ekiti state governor; and others.

In the seven-hour marathon meeting, “the council deliberated on the removal of fuel subsidy and the urgent need to implement palliative measures to cushion the effect on the poor and vulnerable persons/groups in Nigeria. “The Council also looked at the possibility of salary increments for Nigerian workers to lessen the pain occasioned by the subsidy removal,” the statement said.

The council is charged with the responsibility of deliberating critical national issues, coordinating economic planning efforts and programmes at national and sub-national levels and giving advice on economic matters to the president.
