MURIC Distances Self from Statement Issued with Fulani Group, Calls for Clear Distinction from AMURIC
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has clarified that it was not responsible for a statement jointly issued with a Fulani group on Friday, June 5, 2026, stressing that the statement originated from another Islamic organization known as the Amalgamated Muslim Rights Concern (AMURIC).
In a press statement released on Saturday, the organization said the similarity between the names of both groups had created public confusion and necessitated the clarification.
MURIC explained that while AMURIC is a sister Islamic organization comprising respected Muslim members, it differs from MURIC and should adopt a more distinct name to avoid misleading the public about the source of its statements.
The group noted that MURIC has operated under its current name since its establishment in 1994 and that the name was duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), making a name change difficult.
Addressing issues raised in the controversial statement, MURIC stated that it disagreed with AMURIC’s position and saw no justification for mentioning prominent Yoruba figures, including Chief Sunday Igboho, former Ekiti State Governor Chief Ayodele Fayose, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
The organization reaffirmed its position that Yoruba communities, like all ethnic groups in Nigeria, have the right to defend themselves against bandits and terrorists within the confines of the law. It added that security agencies and recognized vigilante groups such as Amotekun, the Oduduwa People’s Congress (OPC), and Iru Ekun should continue efforts to combat insecurity in Yorubaland.
MURIC concluded by reiterating that it had no involvement in the statement issued alongside the Fulani group and urged the public to distinguish between MURIC and AMURIC.
“This clarification became necessary because we have a difference of opinion from the position taken by AMURIC in its press statement of yesterday. In conclusion, it was AMURIC that issued yesterday’s statement in connivance with a Fulani group, not MURIC and we knew nothing about it.” — Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, Secretary, MURIC, Oyo State Chapter.
