President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its outstanding performance at the African Wrestling Championships 2026, where the country secured a record 15th continental title in the women’s category.

Tinubu described the feat as a reflection of consistency, discipline, and national pride, noting that Nigerian wrestlers have once again affirmed their dominance on the African stage.

“With eight gold and two silver medals from 10 women’s events, and an overall haul of nine gold, four silver, and three bronze medals, the results highlight both excellence and depth within the team,” he said.

The President commended standout athletes, including Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu, and Mercy Adekuoroye, for their impressive performances. He also praised Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo for clinching victory in the men’s freestyle category.

He further acknowledged the contributions of Ebierelayefa Andrew, Stephen Akintewe, Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo, and Saviour Egoli, stressing that the team’s success was built on collective effort.

“This is how a sporting nation grows—not by chance, but by design,” Tinubu stated, while emphasising the need to nurture talent and prepare athletes for global success.

The President also highlighted the role of the National Sports Commission under Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade, alongside federations and coaches, in strengthening sports development.

He commended the Nigeria Wrestling Federation led by Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for sustaining the country’s dominance in wrestling.
