NEMA DG Takes Disaster Risk Reduction Awareness to Abuja Primary School Pupils
The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has taken disaster risk reduction advocacy to pupils of LEA Primary School, Durumi, Abuja, where she engaged them in an interactive session focused on safety awareness and prevention.
The visit formed part of NEMA’s ongoing initiative to promote disaster risk reduction education among young Nigerians and to instill a culture of safety from an early age.
According to a statement by the Head of Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, Mrs. Umar emphasized the importance of cultivating basic safety habits among children, noting that early awareness plays a critical role in preventing disasters.
“Simple safety habits and awareness can go a long way in preventing disasters. Children must learn to stay alert and take responsibility for their own safety both at home and in school,” she said.
During the session, the NEMA boss educated the pupils on practical steps to reduce risks associated with common emergencies such as fire outbreaks, flooding, and unsafe play environments. She encouraged them to always report potential hazards to teachers, parents, or other responsible adults.
“Disaster risk reduction is not only the responsibility of emergency responders; it is a shared duty that begins with awareness, preparedness, and responsible behaviour at the community level,” Mrs. Umar added.
The interactive session also featured a question-and-answer segment, providing the pupils with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of disasters and the important roles they can play in promoting safety within their homes, schools, and communities.
