Sokoto Govt to Bello Turji: Show Real Commitment to Peace, Release All Hostages
The Sokoto State Government has urged notorious bandit leader Bello Turji to demonstrate genuine commitment to the ongoing peace process by immediately releasing all kidnapped victims in his custody and putting an end to violent attacks on rural communities.
The appeal was made by Retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, Special Adviser on Security Matters to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, in a statement issued to journalists in Sokoto on Sunday.
Usman’s statement comes in response to a viral audio message circulating on social media, in which Turji expressed a willingness to embrace peace and called on fellow bandit leaders to engage in dialogue.
Reacting to Turji’s message, Usman acknowledged it as a potential step toward ending the persistent violence that has plagued the region. However, he emphasized that words must be matched with concrete actions.
“If Turji is genuinely committed to peace, he must prove it by ending all forms of violence and unconditionally releasing innocent civilians being held hostage,” Usman stated.
He reaffirmed that the safety and welfare of rural communities remain a central concern for Governor Aliyu’s administration.
“There can be no genuine dialogue while communities continue to live in fear and captivity. Peace begins with concrete steps that build trust,” he added.
While expressing the government’s openness to supporting credible peace initiatives, Usman was firm in warning that acts of criminality would not be tolerated under any pretense.
He also appealed to stakeholders across the state—including community leaders, civil society organizations, and religious institutions—to join hands in efforts to restore peace and stability.
In a direct message to Turji and other armed actors, Usman urged them to seize the opportunity to end violence and ensure the safe return of all abducted persons.
It will be recalled that on June 19, the Sokoto State Government restated its commitment to peace and security, pledging to engage in dialogue with any armed group willing to renounce violence and embrace reconciliation.
