Hundreds of students from the University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State took to the streets on Wednesday to protest the prolonged power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

The outage, now in its 82nd day, has disrupted activities at the teaching hospital, which is a crucial training ground for the university’s medical students.

The power supply to UCH was cut off in March 2024 by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) due to outstanding debts.

The hospital faced a similar disconnection in November 2023 for the same reason, and the issue remains unresolved.

Bolaji Aweda, President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, led the peaceful protest and highlighted the significant impact the power outage has had on students and the community.

“We are protesting against what is happening because our students are directly affected,” Aweda said in an interview with DAILY POST.

“For 82 days, there has been no electricity at UCH due to unpaid bills. IBEDC has made it clear that power will only be restored once the debt is settled.”

Efforts to mediate between UCH and IBEDC are yet to yield results, leaving students, hospital staff, and patients grappling with the consequences of the power disruption.
