Somali national army targets Al-Shabaab bases in Hirshabelle, others
The Somalia National Army has reportedly launched a major offensive against the Al-Shabaab group in the Middle Shabelle region.
According to military officials participating in the operation, the national forces targeted the group’s bases in El-baad and Ruunirgood areas which have been the Al-Shabab’s strongholds.
Also, the national forces backed by local armies have launched major offensives against the group in El-dheer, Mesagawey areas and Shan-Dhagood, Saqeer Nab, Moalim Abukar and Hussein Agey, within the region.
The military officials further said the national forces will also expand the operation to flush out the militants from areas such as Galcad, Elbur and Galhareeri. The federal government of Somalia has stated that it will not relent in its ongoing operation to liberate all areas of the country from the militants.
Recently, the national army chief pledged the resumption of the anti-al Shabaab war in the country after it was “temporarily” halted due to the recently concluded holy month of Ramadan.
The Somalia government recently reported that approximately one hundred al-Shabaab members have surrendered across the South-Central states of Galmudug, Southwest, HirShabelle, and Jubaland.
