The House of Representatives has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria for securing the silver medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the fifth time.

In a statement released on Monday, spokesperson Akin Rotimi (APC-Ekiti) conveyed the parliament’s appreciation to the players and coaching staff for their spirited performance in Cote D’Ivoire.

The lawmakers expressed particular delight in the outstanding performance of team captain William Ekong, who was named ‘Man of the Competition.’

“The Super Eagles, based on their performance at the tournament, deserved victory but narrowly lost the AFCON trophy. Nevertheless, they have proven that Nigeria remains the giant of Africa in sports and other endeavours.

“During the tournament, Nigerians showed that we are one great nation. Nigerians are proud of you,” the speaker told the Super Eagles at the end of the game,” the statement said.

The statement stressed that the achievement of the Super Eagles would inspire not just the multitude of sports talents across the country but also people in other spheres of influence to do more for their fatherland.

The Eagles slipped 2-1 to the Elephants of Ivory Coast, the host nation, Sunday night, losing the chance to crown their unbeaten run at the AFCON.
