Somali President jets out to Saudi Arabia after successful shoulder surgery in UAE
The Somali Presidency has announced that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has undergone a successful shoulder surgery in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
His office explained that the president is recovering well from the “minor” medical operation without giving extensive details on what led to the surgery.
State-owned Somali National News Agency (Sonna) reports that he stayed in
Abu Dhabi for a few days, where he also met top Emirati officials.
President Hassan Mahmoud has since travelled to Saudi Arabia, to attend the first Saudi-Africa summit in Riyadh, the capital.
While in Riyadh, the Somali leader is expected to facilitate trade and business opportunities for the Horn of African country, especially at a time when it is struggling with insecurity and heavy floods among other challenges.
The flooding, which has left many people injured and affected an estimated 850,000 others, took the lives of additional 29 people this week, adding to the growing death toll.
Mahamuud Moallim, the head of the agency, confirmed the latest development.
Fourteen people were earlier confirmed killed in the floods on Saturday by the United Nations humanitarian affairs agency (Ocha).
