Lagos unveils state-of-the-art students union building at LASUSTECH
In a momentous development, the Lagos State Government (LASG) celebrated the inauguration of a cutting-edge students union building at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) campus in Ikorodu.
The conversion of the Lagos State Polytechnic campus in Ikorodu to the University of Science and Technology, following approval by the National University Commission (NUC), marked a significant turning point for higher education in the state.
Commitment to Enhancing Educational Standards
The inauguration ceremony, held on Saturday, witnessed the presence of prominent government officials and academic leaders.
Tolani Akibu, the Lagos State Commissioner for Education (Tertiary), delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to elevating the educational standards in higher institutions.
He stressed the need for substantial infrastructure improvements to showcase LASUSTECH as a reputable university and no longer a polytechnic.
“We are coming up strongly; it is a new university, and we have not even graduated any set. What we met on the ground is reasonable and good enough structure of the polytechnic, but there is a need for us to put up better infrastructures. We are no longer a polytechnic but a university; therefore, in no time, when you get to this place, you will see lots of transformation,” Commissioner Akibu declared.
“We are not there yet, but we are moving very fast towards having a better and stronger university.”
He urged students to uphold a strong maintenance culture, reflecting the status of a university of science and technology, while also discouraging vices like cultism and encouraging them to focus on building successful careers in line with the ongoing Greater Lagos agenda.
Academic and Social Transformation
Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, the Vice-Chancellor of LASUSTECH, expressed his gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support for the education sector and for overseeing the construction of this remarkable students’ union building.
He highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the facility, stating, “It provides a good ambience for our students, it will not only strengthen them academically, but they will cope socially and mentally. In every dimension, excellence is our watchword, so we are making progress in all ramifications.”
Surakat Muftaudeen, the President of the students’ union at LASUSTECH, described the new building as a testament to the state government’s dedication to providing an optimal environment for learning and growth. He lauded the initiative for not only enhancing campus infrastructure but also uplifting the spirits of every student.
“I stand before you today filled with immense gratitude and pride as the president of our esteemed students’ union government. It is with great pleasure that I express our heartfelt appreciation to the state government and management for their unwavering support and dedication to uplift our educational institution,” Muftaudeen affirmed.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including Nurudeen Olaleye, the Rector of Lagos State Polytechnic, members of staff, and the institution’s governing council.
The inauguration of this state-of-the-art students union building marks a significant milestone in the evolution of LASUSTECH and its journey towards academic excellence and overall development.
