Shocking! Burkina Faso military thwarts coup attempt by internal security officers
The military junta in Burkina Faso announced on Wednesday that it foiled a coup attempt by security and intelligence services.
The transitional government confirmed “that a coup attempt was foiled on Sept. 26, 2023 by the Burkinabe intelligence and security services.”
According to the statement, officers and other individuals involved in the plan to cause instability in the country have been arrested, and the search for further perpetrators continues.
The government promised to reveal more on the coup attempt at a later time.
As rumors of a mutiny grew, hundreds of Burkinabe came to the streets of the capital, Ouagadougou, to show their support for the transitional administration.
Captain Ibrahim Traore, the commander of the junta, praised the citizens for their unwavering support in a post on X Wednesday.
The head of the military regime vowed to lead the transitional government “safely, despite adversity and various maneuvers to stop the march towards assumed sovereignty.”
Recall that Captain Traore led a military takeover to become Burkina Faso’s new leader after removing Paul Henri-Damiba, who had also come to power in January through a coup.
