Nigerians commend NPF for sanctioning officers who assaulted man in Rivers State

Nigerians have commended the Nigeria Police Force for sanctioning officers who assaulted a man and his wife in Rivers State.

The punishment was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Tuesday April 18, 2023.

The punishment was a sequel to the complaints and findings on video evidence widely circulated on Sunday 9th April, 2023, on social media.

The video unveiled some officers assaulting members of the public, at Emouha, Rivers State.

The statement revealed that there was a follow-up orderly room trial of the affected policemen by the Force Provost Marshal. This led to the deranking of one Adejoh Siaka from inspector to sergeant.

“One Sergeant Ndiwa Kpuebari who was also present at the scene but took no steps to discourage such inappropriate and shameful act was severely reprimanded,” the statement reads.

It added, “However, one Inspector Friday Obaka, who was later discovered to have been absent from the scene of the skirmish was discharged unconditionally at the conclusion of the proceedings.”

The IGP assured Nigerians that all the three policemen will be posted out of Rivers State to other commands and formations to continue their police duties.

The Inspector General of Police has therefore tasked officers and men of the Force to be diligent and uphold the lofty tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Commending the NPF, Vershima Orvell-Dio, said, “This is highly commendable.
The Nigeria Police Force is playing its own part, we the citizens now also need to play our part by obeying lawful instructions from officer and men of the force. Importantly, being law-abiding always.”

Another Nigerian, Imohowo Udoh, commended the power of the social media. He said, “The power of the Social Media can never be underestimated, the spirit of Nigerians who always stand in unison in condemning the dubious conducts of some disgruntled elements in our security organisations is highly appreciated.

“Now the man that they humiliated before his wife can have some level of confidence in himself and the Nigerian Police. Let this and many others who were either dismissed from the force or face rank reduction serve as a deterrent to others who think because they are with guns on the roads, they are above the law.”
