Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a coordinated attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists on the Headquarters 27 Brigade and Buni Gari Checkpoint in Buni Gari, neutralising no fewer than 50 insurgents during the fierce confrontation.

According to a statement issued by Sani Uba, the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, May 8, 2026, when terrorists launched simultaneous assaults from multiple directions in an attempt to overrun the military formation.

The military said troops responded with “devastating firepower, tactical brilliance and resolute determination,” successfully preventing any breach of the camp while inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers.

The statement noted that troops engaged the insurgents from the western, southern and south-western flanks, forcing them to retreat after suffering significant losses. Human intelligence reports indicated that additional terrorist bodies were discovered along withdrawal routes around Gashua, Azare and Kamuya.

The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI was also said to have played a key role in the operation through Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions as well as precision air strikes on fleeing insurgents.

Military authorities disclosed that several weapons and ammunition were recovered from the terrorists, including AK-47 rifles, General Purpose Machine Guns, Rocket-Propelled Grenade launchers, RPG bombs, ammunition boxes and Improvised Explosive Device canisters.

The operation, however, recorded the loss of two soldiers who were killed during the encounter, while wounded personnel are reportedly receiving medical attention.

Operation HADIN KAI said troops and volunteer forces are currently conducting follow-up clearance operations to track fleeing insurgents and prevent any regrouping efforts.

“The terrorists were met with such devastating resistance that they retreated in confusion,” the statement said.

It added, “Operation HADIN KAI remains resolute and battle-ready, maintaining operational dominance across the theatre and ensuring that terrorists are denied freedom of action in any part of the North East region.”
