The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its firm support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, warning international actors against any action that could undermine the country’s constitutional order.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Saturday, Nigeria said its position is anchored on the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union, which uphold the sovereignty and political independence of all member states.

“Nigeria declares its firm and unequivocal support for the sovereignty, unity, and statehood of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the statement read, reaffirming Abuja’s long-standing diplomatic stance on the issue.

The government also recognised the Somali government as the legitimate authority representing the will of the Somali people, commending its efforts to pursue peace, security and national reconciliation despite persistent challenges. Nigeria stressed that it stands in solidarity with Somalia during this critical phase of its nation-building process.

“Nigeria stands in solidarity with Somalia and strongly condemns any actions or rhetoric that seek to undermine its constitutional order and territorial integrity,” the Ministry stated, calling for restraint and respect from all regional and international stakeholders.

Highlighting the broader implications of instability in Somalia, the Nigerian government noted that peace in the country is crucial to the security of the Horn of Africa and the African continent as a whole.

“We believe that the stability of Somalia is integral to the peace and security of the entire Horn of Africa region and the African continent at large,” the statement said.

Nigeria further pledged its continued support for Somalia through multilateral platforms and international cooperation, emphasising the need for collective efforts to rebuild a stable, prosperous and resilient Somali state.

In a clear warning to the international community, the Ministry urged foreign governments and organisations to refrain from recognising any part of Somalia as an independent entity.

According to the statement, “Such actions would only escalate the crisis and should be avoided.”

The press release was signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, ANIPR, and dated Saturday, December 27, 2025, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to African unity and respect for internationally recognised borders.
