NCoS Debunks Fake Reports on Status of Former Inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has debunked reports circulating in some media outlets concerning the status of two individuals, Matthew Nwakeme and Solomon Okwundu, who were charged before the Owerri Magistrate Court on April 10, 2025, for robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Controller of Corrections Umar Abubakar, the NCoS described the reports as false and misleading.
According to the statement, both individuals were held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre as awaiting trial inmates, as indicated in their court warrants. They were later released on bail on July 1, 2025, after meeting all bail conditions.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, MFR, mni, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring due process, and maintaining transparency in the administration of criminal justice.
The NCoS therefore urged the public to disregard the fake video report, emphasizing that it does not reflect the true status of the former inmates.
