Nigeria, World’s Largest Solar Panel Maker Sign Deal for Local Production

Nigeria has signed a major agreement with the world’s largest solar panel manufacturer, LONGi of China, to establish a solar panel production factory in the country — a move aimed at boosting local manufacturing and advancing renewable energy development.
The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) facilitated the landmark deal on behalf of the Federal Government during a follow-up visit to China. This development follows an earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between both parties earlier in the year.
Under the agreement, LONGi will establish a 1,000-megawatt-capacity solar panel production facility in Nigeria to meet the country’s growing demand for renewable energy solutions and reduce dependence on imports.
Speaking on the development, the Director General of the ECN, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, described the deal as “a significant milestone in Nigeria’s renewable energy landscape,” emphasizing that it aligns with the government’s goal of expanding solar manufacturing capacity and ensuring energy sustainability.
Dr. Abdullahi added that the establishment of the factory would support the Renewed Hope Solarization Programme, which focuses on deploying solar mini-grids to public institutions across the country. He noted that local production of solar panels would not only accelerate the implementation of the programme but also create jobs and drive economic growth.
The partnership marks a key step in Nigeria’s efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources and strengthen its position in the global renewable energy market.
