The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Gombe State has sought the support of traditional leaders to strengthen participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

In a statement released on Monday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Sa’ad Umar, paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Gombe and Chairman of the Gombe State Council of Emirs and Chiefs, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, at his palace.

Dr. Umar urged the Emir to mobilize citizens to register and to collect over 60,000 unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in the state. He emphasized the vital role of traditional and religious leaders in ensuring grassroots participation.

“The online pre-registration began on 18th August 2025, while the in-person registration commenced on 25th August 2025,” Dr. Umar explained, noting that the large backlog of uncollected PVCs remains a concern for the commission.

In his remarks, the Emir pledged full support to INEC’s efforts, recalling his previous advocacy contributions such as recording and airing messages to encourage voter registration, PVC collection, and peaceful elections in the state. He directed District and Village Heads present at the meeting to summon local leaders to spread awareness, with particular emphasis on women’s involvement in the electoral process.

The visit also featured an interactive session with District and Village Heads, where Dr. Umar addressed questions and clarified concerns about the exercise.

The REC was accompanied by the Acting Administrative Secretary, Fadimatu Aliyu Bakari, and other members of the State Management Team.
