The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Council and Principal Officers of the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology, Koroma/Saakpenwa, Rivers State.

The institution is set to admit its first students in September 2025.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the TETFund Auditorium in Abuja, was presided over by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa.  He described the university as a “strategic response to urgent environmental challenges.”

He also noted that its location in the heart of Nigeria’s resource base positions it to drive cutting-edge research in environmental sciences, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and sustainable technology.

Although the university was not captured in the 2025 federal budget, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, directed that funds be sourced for its immediate takeoff.  The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has already approved the necessary grant to facilitate commencement.

Dr. Alausa, therefore, charged the newly inaugurated Council to offer visionary and merit-based leadership, safeguard the institution’s autonomy, and resist undue interference. He equally urged them to prioritize academic excellence, faculty development, international partnerships, and robust community engagement.

Representing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, hailed the university as a “beacon of innovation and practical solutions” for national development.

Other dignitaries, including Permanent Secretary Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, Senator Barry Mpigi, National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, and Pro-Chancellor Prof. Don Mon Baridam, pledged full support for the institution’s growth and success.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustained funding, world-class research, and governance reforms to position the university as a leading centre of excellence in Africa.
