Amnesty International Demands NYSC Reverse Withholding of Raye’s Certificate Over Criticism of Tinubu’s Policies

Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to rescind its “arbitrary and outrageous” decision to withhold the discharge certificate of Rita Ushei, popularly known as Raye, despite her completing a year of national service.
In a statement, the rights group said the move reflects “unacceptable intolerance of dissenting voices” and may be linked to Raye’s social media criticism of widespread economic hardship caused by President Bola Tinubu’s policies.
“It is perfectly within her right to express discontent peacefully,” Amnesty International stated. “Instead of punishing her by withholding her NYSC certificate for her opinions on rampant inflation, the authorities should prioritise addressing the country’s escalating economic woes.”
The organisation condemned what it described as “abuse of power and intimidation” against Nigerians who voice dissent, stressing that holding opposing views is not a crime.
In March, Raye reportedly faced threats to her life and violence after a viral TikTok video in which she criticised the government’s handling of the economy, which she said had plunged millions into poverty.
Amnesty International noted that since May 2023, a series of government economic policies have eroded the ability of low-income Nigerians to meet basic needs such as education, food, and healthcare.
“No one should be punished for expressing a dissenting opinion,” the group insisted. “Authorities have an obligation to uphold and respect the right to freedom of expression — without discrimination.”
