NiDCOM Demands Probe into Nigerian’s Mysterious Death in Luxembourg

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called for a thorough investigation into the tragic and controversial death of a Nigerian national, Daniel Eheri, who reportedly died in police custody in Luxembourg earlier this year.
In a strongly worded statement issued by the Commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed deep concern and outrage over the alleged circumstances surrounding Eheri’s death.
Dabiri-Erewa condemned the reported incident in the strongest terms, noting that, “the Commission will work with the Nigerian Embassy in Belgium—which oversees affairs in Luxembourg—to demand a thorough investigation into the matter.”
She further extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the Nigerian community in Luxembourg, assuring them that NiDCOM would work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served. “We will ensure that justice is served and that the circumstances of Mr. Eheri’s death are properly and transparently examined,” she stated.
The Nigerian community in Luxembourg, through its National Coordinator, Mr. Sunday Adekolu, had earlier submitted a written petition to the Nigerian government, seeking urgent action and transparency regarding what it described as an extrajudicial killing.
The petition, titled “Case of an Extrajudicial Killing of a Nigerian by the Police Authority of Luxembourg,” was addressed to NiDCOM’s Chairman and detailed events leading to Eheri’s death.
According to the petition, Eheri was arrested by the Luxembourg Police Grand-Ducale on February 10, 2025, reportedly in possession of foodstuffs. Shockingly, he was confirmed dead by the following day under undisclosed circumstances.
“The late Eheri Daniel was a Nigerian with an untainted record in Luxembourg and a residence permit holder,” Adekolu said, emphasizing the community’s shock over the lack of official explanation for the incident.
Adekolu appealed for government intervention, saying, “To prevent a recurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg, there must be transparency and justice in the handling of this case.”
He also revealed that Nigeria’s Ambassador to Belgium, Ambassador Obinna Chiedu Onowu, who covers Luxembourg, had written two letters regarding the case, both of which were met with silence from Luxembourg authorities.
“The ambassador’s efforts were rebuffed, as there had been no official response to his letters on the matter,” Adekolu lamented.
In his appeal to NiDCOM, Adekolu urged for immediate assistance in pushing for an autopsy and further investigation. “We, the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg, do hereby seek your urgent assistance on the matter, to put records in right perspectives, to persuade the Luxembourg Police Grand-Ducale into conducting autopsy on the remains of EHERI DANIEL,” he wrote.
The Nigerian community is demanding accountability, transparency, and preventative measures to avoid a repeat of such incidents. With NiDCOM now officially involved, pressure is mounting on Luxembourg authorities to break their silence and provide answers.
