Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former Governor of Oyo State and a highly respected mathematician and engineer, has died at the age of 89. He passed away in the early hours of Sunday, just days before marking his 90th birthday on April 14.

Olunloyo, who served briefly as governor from October 1 to December 31, 1983, was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s academic and political spheres. His death was announced by Barrister Oladapo Ogunwusi, a former Editor of the Nigerian Tribune, in an official statement.

“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo… a few days before his 90th birthday,” Ogunwusi stated.

Dr. Olunloyo was not only a politician but also an accomplished technocrat and educationist. He made history as the first Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and later as the pioneer Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic. He was also a traditional titleholder, bearing the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife.

“His unwavering commitment to the advancement of education and national development stands as a lasting legacy. The family appreciates the support and understanding of the press and public as they prepare to honor his memory with a befitting burial,” Ogunwusi added.

Olunloyo had previously been the subject of death rumors in June 2022 and April 2024, both of which were later debunked. Sadly, this time, the news has been confirmed.

As of now, the Oyo State Government has yet to issue an official statement on the passing of the elder statesman.
