Eid-el-Fitr: FG Declares Monday, Tuesday Public Holidays for Celebration

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Monday and Tuesday as public holidays in celebration of this year’s Eid-el-Fitr festival.
This announcement was made on Wednesday by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior. The public holidays will allow Muslim faithful across the country to mark the conclusion of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, prayers, and charity.
Ramadan, which began on March 1, 2024, is expected to end on either Saturday or Sunday, depending on the sighting of the moon. Throughout the month, Nigerian Muslims have observed fasting, participated in nightly Taraweeh prayers, and engaged in acts of kindness and community service.
Eid-el-Fitr, also known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is a time of gratitude and celebration. In Nigeria, it is traditionally observed with special prayers at mosques and Eid grounds, festive meals, and visits to family and friends. The holiday period is also marked by increased commercial activity as markets and businesses cater to celebrants preparing for the festivities.
