Nigeria orders immediate probe into Kogi prison break, vows to recapture escapees
The Federal Government has directed an immediate investigation into the prison break at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, issued the directive on Monday, as confirmed by his aide, Babatunde Alao. In a statement, the minister described the jailbreak as unfortunate and assured the public that all fleeing inmates would be tracked down and recaptured.
To facilitate this, Tunji-Ojo revealed that the authorities would leverage biometric data and deploy technology-driven solutions to locate and apprehend the escapees.
Furthermore, the minister instructed the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the prison facility for an on-site assessment. Ndidi is expected to conduct a thorough audit to uncover the circumstances that led to the security breach.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring order, Tunji-Ojo declared, “We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation.”
The incident has raised fresh concerns about security lapses within Nigeria’s correctional system, prompting calls for tighter measures to prevent further occurrences.
