Isak puts future on hold as Newcastle chase historic Carabao Cup glory

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has temporarily shelved discussions about his future, focusing entirely on ending the club’s 70-year domestic trophy drought in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.
The 25-year-old Swedish forward, who has netted 22 goals this season, has been heavily linked with a move away from St James’ Park, with Arsenal reportedly among his suitors. However, Isak remains unwavering in his commitment to Newcastle’s quest for silverware.
“This club can achieve great things,” he said on Friday before heading to the capital. “We should take it one season at a time, and this year, we have a real chance to win a trophy. That would be amazing for everyone.”
On speculation regarding a potential contract extension, Isak remained non-committal, stating:
“I’m not thinking about the summer right now. That will probably be a talking point once the season is finished.”
One of the key matchups in the final will be Isak’s duel with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. The Newcastle star has a strong record against the Reds, with three goals and an assist in five appearances against Van Dijk-led defences.
Despite this, Isak insists he is not fixated on any individual battle, saying:
“I wouldn’t say I fear anyone. I have a lot of respect for Van Dijk and their defence, but I always focus on myself. It’s not me against one player—it’s Newcastle against Liverpool.”
Newcastle will have to navigate the final without suspended winger Anthony Gordon, while defenders Lewis Hall and Sven Botman remain sidelined through injury. Despite the setbacks, Isak remains confident of making history with his team at Wembley.
