A violent shootout in Lenasia, South Africa, has resulted in the fatal shooting of two armed suspects, with others sustaining injuries, during a Crime Intelligence-led operation involving multiple law enforcement units.

Authorities revealed that the suspects were allegedly connected to ATM bombings and other serious crimes across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.

The crime scene remains active, with investigators combing through evidence as the probe continues.

The latest incident comes amid rising concerns over crime and public safety in Lenasia. In January, 27-year-old Ashwin Mouwers was shot dead outside the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court while waiting to testify in a murder trial, a case that has reignited calls for stronger witness and whistleblower protection.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, Mouwers was a key witness in a 2021 murder case in Eldorado Park, further highlighting escalating violence and security concerns in the region.
