Pope Francis’s health shows slight improvement amid complex condition

The Vatican provided an update on Tuesday evening, stating that Pope Francis’ condition remains stable with slight improvements despite an overall complex clinical situation.
The 86-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14, continues to receive high-flow oxygen therapy via nasal cannulas while adhering to his prescribed treatments.
Although the Vatican did not issue a detailed medical bulletin, it emphasized that his prognosis is no longer considered “guarded”, though doctors still acknowledge the complexity of his condition. A more detailed update is expected on March 12.
Despite his hospitalization, Pope Francis remains engaged in spiritual exercises from his private chapel.
Pope Francis has endured multiple health issues throughout his life. In 2022, persistent knee problems forced him to cancel trips and rely on a cane or wheelchair. In March 2023, he was hospitalized for a respiratory infection, followed by abdominal surgery for a hernia months later.
Earlier this year, the Vatican reported that he suffered a fall at home, injuring his right arm.
Born in Argentina in 1936, Pope Francis has battled health challenges since a young age. At 21, he underwent lung surgery due to severe pneumonia, an experience that he later credited as a turning point in his decision to join the Jesuits.
As the leader of the Catholic Church since 2013, Pope Francis remains dedicated to his duties despite ongoing health struggles.
