A Moral Victory for Nigeria: Reps Move to Block Pornographic Websites, Protect Societal Values

In a decisive move to uphold moral values and protect societal well-being, the House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block all websites hosting pornographic and obscene content in the country.
The resolution, passed on Tuesday, was sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina, who warned about the growing dangers of cyber pornography.
He argued that Nigeria, a deeply religious nation, must take bold steps to safeguard its moral fabric.
Tafoki highlighted how several countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have enacted laws restricting pornography, emphasizing the need for Nigeria to follow suit.
He also referenced experts’ concerns over the harmful effects of pornography, stating:
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content.”
Beyond personal harm, he warned of pornography’s potential to fuel adultery, prostitution, and addiction, posing a serious threat to the nation’s cultural and religious values.
With this resolution, lawmakers have positioned Nigeria alongside nations taking proactive steps to regulate online content, reinforcing the country’s commitment to moral responsibility and the protection of future generations.
