President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, to the State House in Abuja on Monday.

President Bio arrived at the Forecourt of the Presidential Villa at 12:22 p.m., where he was received by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The visiting leader was greeted with traditional bagpipe music and a ceremonial welcome by the Presidential Guards Brigade.

Nigeria and Sierra Leone have maintained strong diplomatic relations since gaining independence in October 1960 and April 1961, respectively.

The two West African nations are active members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), collaborating on initiatives to promote peace, stability, and development across the region.

While details of the meeting between the two leaders were not immediately disclosed, the visit highlights the enduring diplomatic ties and mutual cooperation between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

Trade relations between the two countries have seen fluctuations in recent years. According to a 2023 estimate, Nigeria’s exports to Sierra Leone were valued at approximately $5.55 million, primarily comprising fertilizers, miscellaneous edible preparations, electrical and electronic equipment, glass and glassware, and coffee, tea, mate, and spices. On the other hand, Sierra Leone’s exports to Nigeria include animals and vegetable fats and oils, machinery and boilers, rubber products, and fish and crustaceans.
