Pope Francis remains in critical condition after experiencing a “prolonged respiratory crisis” that required high-flow oxygen, the Vatican announced.

The 88-year-old pontiff, hospitalized for over a week with double pneumonia and chronic bronchitis, is “suffering more than yesterday,” according to the latest update.

The Vatican stated that Francis faced a “prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis” on Saturday morning, necessitating intensive oxygen therapy.

He also underwent blood transfusions after tests revealed thrombocytopenia, a condition linked to anemia. Despite his critical state, the Pope remains alert and spent the day seated in an armchair. “The Holy Father’s condition continues to be critical… At the moment, the prognosis is reserved,” the statement read.

Earlier on Saturday, the Vatican confirmed that Francis would miss leading Sunday prayers for the second consecutive week, though he reportedly “rested well.” He is expected to prepare a written homily for someone else to deliver during the Angelus.

Millions worldwide have expressed concern over the Pope’s declining health, with speculation growing about a possible resignation—a topic the Vatican has not addressed. Doctors emphasized on Friday that while Francis is “not out of danger,” he is not at immediate risk of death.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of the medical team, explained that the Pope had been battling seasonal flu and fatigue due to his demanding duties. He is now fighting a multipronged respiratory infection caused by bacteria and viruses. Although sepsis has not developed, doctors warned of the risk of the infection spreading, which remains their primary concern.

Francis has a history of respiratory issues, including the removal of part of a lung due to pleurisy in his youth and a severe case of pneumonia in 2023. His current condition underscores the challenges he faces as he continues his papacy amid ongoing health struggles.
