PDP secures landslide victory in disputed Osun local government elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has swept all 30 chairmanship and 332 councillorship seats in the disputed local government elections held on Saturday in Osun State, according to results announced by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC).
The OSSIEC Chairman, Hashim Abioye, made the declaration on state-owned Osun Broadcasting Corporation in Osogbo, confirming that 18 political parties participated in the polls.
“The local council election was successfully conducted in compliance with constitutional provisions, existing laws, regulations, and guidelines,” he said.
Abioye further declared all PDP candidates victorious across the 332 wards and 30 local government areas, adding that the results are available for verification. “As the chief returning officer, I hereby declare each one duly elected as chairmen and councillors of their respective areas,” he stated.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), the main opposition party in Osun, had earlier withdrawn from the election, citing legal concerns.
In a letter dated February 17, APC State Secretary, Alao Kamoru, informed OSSIEC of the party’s decision, referencing a February 10 Court of Appeal ruling in Akure that reinstated its previously sacked officials.
During his announcement, Abioye apologized to the media for the commission’s failure to provide accreditation tags for election coverage, blaming security agencies for sealing off the commission’s office where materials were stored.
