Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of orchestrating a violent assault on democracy in Osun State.

In a scathing statement, Atiku described the events of the past weekend as a “chilling display of lawlessness,” alleging that the ruling party deployed “armed thugs and mercenaries” to seize control of all 30 local government area council secretariats.

“Nigerians bore witness to a chilling display of lawlessness yesterday, as the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) exposed the depths of its desperation to retain power at all costs — through sheer political brigandage and the subversion of democracy.”

Atiku accused the national leadership of the APC and the presidency of turning a blind eye to the chaos, calling their silence “complicit.” However, he praised the people of Osun State for resisting the alleged electoral assault.

“Had it not been for the fearless resistance of Osun people — who stood their ground against the APC’s rampaging foot soldiers — democracy in the state would have been trampled under the boots of political marauders acting at the behest of their party’s overlords.”

The former vice president urged security agencies to act impartially in the upcoming local government elections, warning against being used as tools for electoral malpractice.

“We demand that security agencies deployed for Saturday’s elections uphold their constitutional duty with professionalism, refusing to be used as enforcers of APC’s criminal agenda. The world is watching.”

He further accused the APC of abandoning democratic principles and resorting to “brute force” to remain in power despite losing public support.

“These are dangerous times. The APC has abandoned any pretence of democratic legitimacy, resorting instead to brute force in its bid to cling to power — even as the people have overwhelmingly rejected it.”

Atiku commended the people of Osun for their resilience, calling their resistance a “beacon of hope” against tyranny. He warned that Tinubu’s administration was leading Nigeria into political chaos, urging citizens to resist any attempt to subvert democracy.

“Tinubu’s APC has left no doubt — it will stop at nothing to subvert democracy and impose itself against the will of the people. But Nigerians must resist. The time-honored warning remains true: eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

Calling on President Tinubu to end what he termed as “reckless acts of political sabotage,” Atiku said.
