As the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas shows signs of disentanglement, Palestinians in Gaza are expressing deep concern about the potential return of war.
With tensions rising, many fear that any collapse of the agreement could lead to a devastating escalation.
Mohammed Yusuf, a resident of Khan Younis, shared his anxiety: “People are afraid. They’re stocking up on supplies for fear that war will return again.” The persistent threat of violence has left residents living in a state of heightened alert. Yusuf added, “There’s no safety, because any flaw in the agreement leads to the threat of a return of war. People, due to the many things they faced during the war, have become afraid of anything from any statement, from both sides, whether from the enemy or the ruling authority in Gaza.”
Al-Jazeera reported that Samir Abu Latifa, another resident from Khan Younis, equally expressed fears about the fragile peace: “In Gaza, we are afraid of these statements, afraid that a war more severe than the previous war will break out, because of all these threats,” he said, adding that the community felt a brief moment of relief when the ceasefire took hold. “We breathed a sigh of relief when the ceasefire came into force and when people returned to their homes.”
As uncertainty looms, the prospect of war’s return continues to instill fear in the hearts of Gaza’s residents, leaving them anxiously watching for any signs of further conflict.
Recall that Hamas recently suspended the next release of captives held in Gaza indefinitely, accusing Israel of violating the terms of the ceasefire deal, including by continuing to kill Palestinians and obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid.
