The Federal High Court, Abuja Division, has indefinitely adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following a contentious legal standoff over jurisdiction.

Presiding over the matter on Monday, Justice Binta Nyako gave the after Kanu and his counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, insisted that she no longer had the authority to oversee the case due to her earlier recusal.

Back in September 2024, Justice Nyako recused herself from the trial after a defence request, prompting the transfer of the case file to the chief judge. However, in a surprising turn, Federal High Court Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho, returned the case to Justice Nyako, arguing that the defence must submit a formal application for the recusal to be valid.

Kanu, visibly frustrated, questioned the authority of the court, declaring that all the judge said was meaningless to him.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the ruling, Kanu accused Justice Nyako of bias and maintained that the prosecution had no authority to try him. He further criticized the Nigerian judiciary, asserting that a lack of legal knowledge was affecting the country.
