Son of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu discloses illness that led to father’s death

Jidechukwu Iwuanyanwu, the eldest son of the late former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has revealed that his father developed heart complications after visiting Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.
According to Jidechukwu, his father was made to walk for 20 minutes during the visit, after which he complained of discomfort.
Upon returning home, the elder statesman fell ill the following morning and was rushed to the hospital, where he remained until his passing on July 25, 2024, at the age of 82.
While in the hospital, he continued to advocate for Kanu’s release and the establishment of the South East Development Commission, believing these to be vital for peace and progress in the region.
“Undeterred, my father sojourned on to see Kanu and had a father-son moment with him,” Jidechukwu’s statement read. “On returning home, my father complained of his heart and retired to his room to rest. The next morning, he broke down and was rushed to the hospital.”
As Kanu appears in court, Jidechukwu has urged President Bola Tinubu to honor his father’s last wish by releasing the IPOB leader.
