Minister of Works, David Umahi, has affirmed that more federal roads will be tolled to enhance infrastructure maintenance.

During an inspection of ongoing construction on the Abuja-Kaduna dual carriageway on Saturday, he highlighted the Federal Government’s reliance on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to revamp Nigeria’s road network for economic growth.

Umahi disclosed that major roads spanning the six geopolitical zones and vital economic corridors would be tolled. However, he emphasized, “we will not toll any road that has not been fully completed. Before tolling, we must ensure the road is 100 per cent finished.”

Acknowledging the deterioration of previously completed roads, he assured that agreements with stakeholders would guide necessary maintenance efforts. Addressing the broader challenge of road upkeep, he questioned, “How do you maintain 35,000 kilometres of road? We must involve the private sector in this maintenance effort.”

He stressed that maintenance must be proactive, ensuring that completed sections remain in good condition. “If a 200-kilometre road has 150 kilometres completed, we must decide on maintenance plans. Without maintenance, those sections could deteriorate. That is our focus. However, for now, no unfinished road will be tolled,” he reiterated.

Umahi further assured that the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway would be completed within 14 months. He revealed that sections one and three had been awarded to Infoquest Nigeria Ltd., with efforts underway to repair failed portions, including 38 kilometres of depressions along section one from Abuja to Kaduna.
