The Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has called for united efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria.
Her appeal came in a statement on Thursday, marking the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation in Lagos.
FGM involves the partial or total removal of female external genitalia or other injuries to female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
It is most commonly performed on girls between infancy and 15 years of age, violating fundamental human rights, including health, security, and dignity.
Meranda expressed solidarity with individuals and organizations worldwide in condemning this harmful practice. “This year’s theme, #StepUpThePace, is a call to action. We must accelerate efforts to end this barbaric practice once and for all. It is not just the responsibility of governments but of everyone—legislators, healthcare workers, professionals, and all concerned individuals,” she stated.
She highlighted the importance of safeguarding young girls’ health and rights, pledging to advocate for policies that raise awareness and protect potential victims.
Stressing the need for a collective response, she urged society to come together to ensure a future free from FGM.
Meranda reaffirmed her commitment to championing policies that protect girls and eradicate the practice, calling on everyone to take action in their respective capacities. “A world free from this harmful practice is possible through collective effort,” she concluded.
