Sudan: Drone attack on El-Fasher Hospital kills 30, injures several
A devastating drone attack on the Saudi Hospital in El-Fasher, one of the few remaining functioning medical facilities in Sudan’s Darfur region, has claimed the lives of 30 people and left dozens injured on Friday evening, a medical source reported.
The bombing destroyed the hospital’s emergency building, according to a source who spoke to AFP anonymously, citing fears of retaliation. The attack has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the besieged city of El-Fasher.
The perpetrators of the attack remain unknown, with both warring sides—the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—engaged in a brutal conflict since April 2023.
The RSF, which has taken control of much of Darfur, has laid siege to El-Fasher since May but has failed to capture the city.
Tensions escalated last week when the RSF issued an ultimatum for army forces and their allies to vacate El-Fasher. Sporadic clashes and artillery fire have followed, including deadly shelling at the famine-stricken Abu Shouk displacement camp, where eight people were killed Friday morning.
The United Nations has expressed alarm over the escalating violence, urging both sides to prioritize civilian safety in El-Fasher, a city home to nearly two million people.
“The people of El-Fasher have suffered so much already from many months of senseless violence and brutal violations,” said Seif Magango, spokesman for the U.N. rights office.
The conflict in Darfur has decimated infrastructure, displaced millions, and left civilians vulnerable to violence and famine.
El-Fasher continues to endure the devastating toll of war, with no end to the suffering in sight.
