The Brazilian government has officially announced Nigeria’s inclusion as a partner country in the multinational bloc, BRICS.

The announcement was made through a statement by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry on Friday, highlighting Nigeria’s strategic alignment with the bloc’s goals.

According to the statement, BRICS and Nigeria share mutual priorities, including fostering South-South cooperation and advocating for reforms in international organizations to address global governance challenges.

“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—Nigeria is one of the continent’s leading economies. It shares common interests with BRICS members and plays an active role in promoting South-South cooperation and the reform of global governance—key priorities for Brazil during its presidency,” the statement read.

Brazil assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, 2025, succeeding Russia.

Nigeria’s inclusion places it alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan as the ninth partner country in this new BRICS partnership category established during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.
