A rising star in Nigeria’s medical field, Dr. Murtala Saleh, met a tragic end when armed bandits stormed Kankara General Hospital in Katsina State on Tuesday night.

Dr. Saleh, known for his exceptional academic achievements, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to his right thigh during the attack, according to local reports.

The assailants, wielding AK-47 rifles, clashed with local police in a gunfight that left another victim, Kamala Suleiman, with a knee injury. Despite police efforts to repel the attackers, the bandits abducted three individuals from the hospital premises.

Dr. Saleh succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack, a devastating blow to the medical community and Kankara.

He was celebrated as the overall best graduating medical student of 2019 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, excelling in key disciplines such as physiology, surgery, and pharmacology, among others.

The loss of Dr. Saleh underscores the grim reality of Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis, where rising violence continues to claim the lives of its brightest minds.

Residents and medical professionals mourn not only the loss of a gifted doctor but also the relentless challenges faced by the nation.

Katsina State authorities have vowed to pursue the attackers, but the grief-stricken community is left grappling with the void left by a man whose potential was cut tragically short.
