The Nigerian government has officially submitted the required documentation to Finland for the extradition of Biafra separatist leader, Simon Ekpa. This was confirmed by Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, during an interview on Channels Television.

“Well, I’m sure he’s cooling off somewhere,” Musa remarked. “Legal action will be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say too much, but I’m glad he’s been arrested. The Federal Government has provided most of the required documentation to the Finnish Government, so I’m confident the right steps will be taken.”

Ekpa was arrested by Finnish authorities in November 2024, alongside four others, on allegations of involvement in terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism. The Lahti District Court in Finland subsequently ordered his remand, citing probable cause for public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent in Nigeria.

The separatist leader has been accused of leveraging social media platforms to disseminate separatist propaganda and advocate for the violent secession of southeastern Nigeria. His activities have drawn widespread condemnation and legal scrutiny for allegedly contributing to unrest in the region.

The Nigerian government’s extradition request represents a significant step in addressing Ekpa’s alleged role in destabilizing the country and underscores its commitment to ensuring accountability for actions perceived as threats to national security.

Further developments are anticipated as Finnish authorities review Nigeria’s formal request.
