Ruben Amorim has admitted that Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle has left the club in a serious battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Describing the defeat at Old Trafford as “embarrassing” and “grim,” former club captain Gary Neville highlighted United’s precarious position, now just seven points above the relegation zone at the season’s halfway mark.

When asked by Sky Sports if United were in a relegation fight, Amorim responded candidly, stating, “That is really clear. It’s one of the most difficult moments in the history of Man Utd and we have to address it with honesty.”

He further acknowledged the challenge ahead, admitting the difficulty of turning things around at such a critical time. “When you have these kind of moments, especially in the big clubs, it’s really hard to turn things around, especially when you don’t have a lot of time to train the basics,” he said.

Newcastle’s dominant performance in the first 30 minutes sealed United’s fate early in the match, with the fourth consecutive defeat already confirmed by half-time.

Amorim admitted, “They were the better team and they started very strong… it was very hard for us to turn it around after we conceded the first goal.”

He also reflected on his team’s struggles, acknowledging that they lacked the positioning and resilience to cope with the pressure, and that Newcastle simply outperformed them on the day.
