“I knew it would be tough”: C. Ronaldo opens up about new Man Utd coach as poor form persists
Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed confidence in Ruben Amorim’s ability to steer Manchester United back to success, despite a challenging start for the Portuguese manager.
Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag last month, has endured a difficult run, losing five of his first ten matches in charge.
Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, where he was named Best Middle East Player of 2024, Ronaldo praised Amorim’s previous work at Sporting CP, saying, “He (Amorim) did a fantastic job in Portugal with my (club) Sporting.”
However, he acknowledged that managing in the Premier League is a much tougher challenge. “The Premier League is a different beast, the most competitive league in the world,” Ronaldo remarked.
Amorim, meanwhile, has admitted the pressure of managing at Old Trafford, especially after a streak of three consecutive defeats. He emphasized that no manager can afford to become complacent in such a high-stakes environment.
Despite this, Ronaldo remains optimistic, saying, “I knew that it would be tough and they will continue the storm. But the storm will finish and the sun will rise. Fingers crossed, it will be good with him and I hope the best for Manchester United because it is a club I still love.”
Ronaldo left United in November 2022, following a controversial interview with Piers Morgan, amidst internal turmoil.
Reflecting on the club’s struggles, he reiterated that the issue was not with the coaches. “It’s like the aquarium and you have the fish inside and it’s sick, and you take him out and fix the problem. If you put it back in the aquarium, it will be sick again. This is the problem of Manchester United. It is the same,” he concluded.
