Cyclone Chido has claimed at least 34 lives in Mozambique since making landfall on Sunday.

The U.N. Office confirmed the figure for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which cited data from Mozambique’s disaster agency.

The storm’s severe impact has also left 319 injured, affecting an estimated 174,158 people across the region.

Before striking Mozambique on Africa’s eastern coast, Cyclone Chido unleashed its full force on Mayotte, a small French island. Preliminary reports indicate the possibility of significant casualties, with hundreds or potentially thousands believed to have perished as the cyclone ravaged the island.

OCHA’s statement emphasized the severe toll of the storm, detailing the widespread damage and human cost.

The Mozambican Institute for Natural Disasters continues to assess the full extent of the destruction and coordinate emergency response efforts.

The humanitarian crisis unfolds as affected communities grapple with devastation, urgent medical needs, and displacement. Rescue and relief teams are working tirelessly to reach impacted areas, as more information on the cyclone’s full impact emerges.
