South Africa: Manhunt launched for three escapees from cells
South African authorities have initiated a manhunt for three suspects who escaped from a police holding cell in Swartruggens, North West.
The escapees, initially four in total, managed to break out through the roof of their detention cell. However, police successfully rearrested one of them.
“Police managed to trace and arrested one of the escapees, aged 23, whilst hiking next to the N4 road, near Swartruggens plaza,” a police statement confirmed.
The search continues for the other three suspects, including 29-year-old Mpho Vincent Madito, who faces four rape charges from incidents in Swartruggens and Makgobistad, 25-year-old Thapelo Mogwele Molebatsi, who was detained for theft, and Johannes Mfaladi, aged 28, who is charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The fourth suspect, who was rearrested, is due to appear in court on Wednesday to face charges related to escaping lawful custody. Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the escape and are committed to re-arresting the remaining three suspects.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the escapees is urged to contact the nearest police station or the investigating officer, Captain Peterson Monageng, at 082 569 5868.
