Ghana’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has made a triumphant return to the presidency after clinching victory in Saturday’s tightly contested election.

The result marks a significant political comeback for Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017 but lost two subsequent election bids.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Mahama’s main opponent, conceded defeat on Sunday, acknowledging the “emphatic victory” and respecting the decision of the Ghanaian electorate. “The people of Ghana have spoken; the people have voted for change at this time, and we respect it with all humility,” Bawumia said in a concession speech aimed at ensuring a smooth transition of power.

Mahama confirmed receiving Bawumia’s congratulatory call via a post on X (formerly Twitter), solidifying his win as a landmark achievement for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which also claimed victory in the parliamentary elections, according to tallies from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The election results signal the conclusion of the NPP’s eight-year tenure under President Nana Akufo-Addo, marked by an economic downturn with record-high inflation and a debt crisis. Bawumia, in his speech, highlighted the importance of Ghana’s peaceful democratic traditions, calling on all stakeholders to prioritize the nation’s stability.

Despite reports of isolated violence, including a fatal shooting at a polling station, Ghana’s election process reinforced its reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies.

Mahama’s return to power comes with heightened expectations for addressing Ghana’s economic challenges and restoring confidence in governance. The victory represents a call for change and renewed hope among the Ghanaian populace.
