FG urges vigilance against emerging XEC COVID-19 variant in Nigerian hospitals
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has directed health authorities nationwide to activate enhanced alert systems in response to the emergence of the XEC COVID-19 variant, a rapidly spreading strain.
The directive, issued in a letter dated December 5 by Dr. O.N. Anuma, Permanent Secretary of the Teaching Hospital Division, emphasized the need for immediate vigilance as the variant has been detected in 29 countries after first being identified in Australia. Dr. Anuma highlighted that the XEC variant has demonstrated a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.
The letter stated:“This variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”
Hospitals have been instructed to maintain a high index of suspicion for COVID-like symptoms and ensure heightened monitoring protocols are in place. The ministry called for collaboration among medical institutions and timely information sharing with the government to ensure an effective response.
The XEC variant, first identified in Germany in June, has since spread across Europe, the United States, and other nations, infecting over 600 individuals. Scientists warn that the variant’s new mutations may enhance its transmission potential, though vaccines are expected to remain effective in preventing severe cases.
