Lionel Messi win MLS MVP award despite injury-hit season
Lionel Messi has been named the 2024 MLS Most Valuable Player, a testament to his stellar performances that helped Inter Miami set a record regular season points tally and secure the club’s first-ever Supporters Shield.
Despite battling injuries throughout the campaign, the 37-year-old maestro finished with an impressive 36 goal contributions, including 20 goals and 16 assists, leading the league in this category.
Messi’s MVP achievement is particularly remarkable given that he played only 19 matches during the regular season. While his individual performances were outstanding, Miami’s season ended on a sour note with a surprising first-round exit in the MLS Cup playoffs.
The Argentine forward becomes the 10th South American to win the MVP award, joining an elite group of five Argentinians who have previously earned the honor, including Luciano Acosta, Diego Valeri, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, and Christian Gomez.
