Yahaya Bello, the immediate past governor of Kogi State, has been remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his arraignment on charges of alleged money laundering.

Justice Maryanne Anenih of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) issued the remand order after hearing arguments from both the defense and prosecution on Bello’s bail application.

Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), argued that the charges against his client were bailable and urged the court to grant him bail.

Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), representing the EFCC, opposed the bail application, questioning its timing and procedural appropriateness, as it was filed on November 22, prior to Bello’s arraignment.

Bello and two former Kogi State officials, Abdulsalami Hudu and Umar Oricha, are accused of misappropriating state funds to acquire properties in upscale areas of Abuja and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, allegedly valued at ₦110.4 billion.

Security was tight around the court premises, with personnel from the Army, Department of State Services (DSS), EFCC, and Police deployed to maintain order.

Justice Anenih adjourned the case to December 10, 2024, when the court will rule on the bail applications. Until then, Bello will remain in EFCC custody.
